Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O;)

The Transportation Engineer 1 performs the crash data analysis including predictive modeling using Safety Analyst or other predictive modeling software. The position is responsible for training, implementation, and integration of predictive modeling into crash evaluation and network screening processes. The position also performs engineering design work Including optimization using tools such as Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) or other optimization software to recommend and/or refine safety countermeasures. This position estimates the construction cost of various suggested enhancements. Determines the Benefit/Cost ratios associated with the proposed enhancement(s) for each site. Researches new or promising techniques or technologies for safety enhancement and provides background and briefing on new technologies.

The position reviews and approves design exception reports for other divisions. Writes official memos, reports, and presentations under his or her own name at the completion of each safety evaluation. The position also supervises staff to conduct safety analysis.


Knowledge of:

  • Engineering principles and practices including engineering design, computer aided drafting, design optimization and computer modeling

  • Traffic engineering principles and practices

  • Gathering, organizing, analyzing safety data and applying traffic engineering

  • State of Arizona Registration as a Professional Engineer or be eligible for reciprocity in the State of Arizona.

  • Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Civil Engineering, from an accredited 4 year college

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete page 7 and sign the Driver Form on page 8 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).
